Internal Medicine Consultations

Dr. Kelly St. Denis is Brantford’s only feline specialist board certified with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. When your cat is experiencing complex medical issues that require additional attention from a specialist, you can book a one hour internal medicine consultation for you and your cat.  The first step in arranging an internal medicine consult is to call the clinic and schedule an appointment.

 

At that time information about your current or previous veterinary care will be requested and we will obtain your cat’s full medical records.  Prior to your cat’s appointment, the specialist will review your cat’s medical record in full detail.  This will avoid duplication of any diagnostic testing and allows the specialist to guide your cat’s care in the appropriate direction based on the history.

 

At the consultation, the case will be discussed with you, the pet parent.  You cat will receive a full physical examination and any additional assessments that are necessary (neurological examination, orthopaedic examination, etc).  Recommendations for diagnostic testing and therapeutic options will be discussed.  Together with you, the pet parent, the specialist will form a plan of care that meets your and your cat’s needs.

roblem(s), perform a full physical examination and discuss recommendations based on your concerns and the examination findings.  The cost of these visits includes telephone and

 email based follow-up support from the veterinary team.

Preventive Care Examinations & Vaccinations

A wellness examination is a hospital visit designed to provide a skilled veterinary assessment of an apparently healthy patient on an annual to semi-annual basis.  During a wellness examination, the veterinarian will perform a full physical examination, obtain a full history of the cat’s lifestyle at home and discuss recommendations based on any concerns you or the veterinarian may have.  During this visit, the vaccination needs of your cat will be addressed.

Based on your cat’s lifestyle and risk factors, the veterinarian will assist you in designing a vaccination schedule specifically tailored to your cat’s needs.  If your cat is diagnosed with health issues or is over the age of 7 (senior), the veterinarian will make recommendations for appropriate diagnostic testing.

Behavioural Consultations

From time to time our feline friends may experience behavioural issues that require veterinary assistance. These include but are not limited to issues such as inappropriate elimination (urination or bowel movements or both out side of the litter box), play aggression, inter cat aggression, territorial aggression & redirected aggression. A behavioural consultation includes a full physical examination of your cat as well as a full consultation on the history of the problem.

 

We work with you to assist you in identifying the source(s) of the problem and developing behavioural modification strategies to reduce or eliminate the problem. We provide you with the support you need to continue to implement these strategies. The cost of these visits includes telephone and email based follow-up support from the veterinary team.

 

Nutritional Consultations

Cats are a carnivorous species. Their nutritional needs are extremely unique and may vary depending on their age and health status. The Charing Cross Cat Clinic provides nutritional consultations to all of our patients during their wellness visits. In addition, as part of our spay-neuter program, we offer a free nutritional consultation to our clients when their cat reaches one year of age. Proper nutrition is the key to a healthy, happy cat. The cost of these visits includes telephone and email based follow-up support from the veterinary team. Dr. St. Denis and Jade, our Registered Veterinary Technician, have joined forces to form the CCCC Nutritional Support Team. Most of these services are free to regular clients and can be accessed in person, by phone and/or email

In-house diagnostic laboratory

In order to provide prompt information about your cat’s well being, we are able to perform certain blood biochemistry and hematology tests in the clinic. This includes pre-anesthetic blood testing, senior wellness blood testing, thyroid blood testing, urine analysis, fecal analysis, blood pressure testing, viral testing, heartworm testing, pancreatitis testing and more. All clients whose cats undergo blood testing will receive a complimentary phone call from the veterinarian to discuss the results within a 24-48 hour period.

 

 

Dental Care, Dental Surgery & Dental Radiography

When a dental procedure is recommended, your cat will have access to all the equipment and care necessary to perform a complete oral health assessment as well as treatment of diseased tissue and teeth. All cats undergo full oral dental radiographs as a means of assessing tooth root structures, as well as crowns. The clinic is equipped with a high-speed dental drill, piezo dental scaler and polishing unit. Dr. St. Denis has received additional training in feline dental health care, including interpretation of feline dental radiographs and surgical extraction of feline teeth. Most treatment procedures can be performed in-clinic, however, certain conditions may require referral to a veterinary dentist.

 

In-house Radiology (X-ray)

In order to provide prompt information about your cat’s illness, lameness, arthritis or as a screening tool for senior cats, radiography is available in clinic. Radiographs are interpreted on site by the attending veterinarian. Radiograph results are available the same day and will be discussed with the client in detail. Consultation with a board certified radiologist may be deemed necessary from time to time and is offered as a complimentary service to clients whose cat’s radiographs have been taken in-clinic.

Surgery Services

Charing Cross Cat Clinic is fully equipped to provide your cat with the necessary elective (spay and neuter) and non-elective surgery procedures. Non-elective procedures include dental surgery, skin tumor removal, skin biopsies, mammary tumor removal, mastectomy, thyroidectomy, bladder stone removal, gastrointestinal exploration, gastrointestinal biopsy, splenectomy, liver biopsy, and other procedures. Specialty procedures such as orthopedic surgery for fractures or other orthopedic problems are referrred to board certified veterinary surgeons at the Ontario Veterinary College or Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency Referral.
The Charing Cross Cat Clinic no longer offers declaw services but is pleased to provide behavioural and environmental support to clients as they train their cats to scratch in acceptable locations.

Specialty diagnostic procedures

Specialty diagnostic procedures such as gastrointestinal and urinary tract ultrasound are offered in the clinic.  Results are often available within 5 to 7 business days for non-urgent cases and within <24 hours for urgent cases.  The results are reviewed with the client and discussed in detail. The cost of these visits includes telephone and email based follow-up support from the feline specialist and veterinary team members.

 

 

Housecalls

Young adult cats and kittens requiring preventive care examinations are eligible for a house call visit from the veterinarian.   It is recommended that senior cats and cats with health concerns and illness visit the clinic for their examination in they often require diagnostic testing or hospitalization.

At home euthanasia is also available to our patients.

Clients’ cats that require weigh-ins, nail trims or minor grooming procedures may take advantage of our veterinary assistant house call service.  In these situations, our veterinary assistant will come to your home and provide the necessary services.
